Bearaby Cotton Napper Weighted Blanket: A Plain Buying Guide Before You Buy

If you have been eyeing a heavy, chunky knit blanket for the couch or the bed, the Bearaby Cotton Napper weighted blanket is one of the best known. It is a weighted blanket made from knitted organic cotton, with no beads, pellets or hidden fillers inside. The weight comes from the cotton loops themselves.

One thing up front: I have not tested this one myself. Everything below comes from Bearaby's own product page and the Amazon listing, with a second look at an independent review, so read this as a buying guide, not a hands on review.

What the Bearaby Cotton Napper Is

Bearaby says the Cotton Napper is made of 100 percent organic cotton, inside and out, and that it is hand knitted. Because it is knitted, there is no stuffing to shift around. Bearaby also says it is certified OEKO TEX Made in Green, and the Amazon listing describes it as OEKO TEX Standard 100 certified and machine washable.

Hand knitting has one side effect worth knowing. Bearaby states that size and weight can vary slightly from blanket to blanket.

Weights and Sizes

The Cotton Napper comes in four weights, each in one size. Bearaby lists them like this: 10 pounds at 40 by 64 inches, 15 pounds at 40 by 72 inches, 20 pounds at 45 by 72 inches, and 25 pounds at 48 by 72 inches.

It is made for one person. Bearaby sizes the Napper to fit your body, not your bed, so it will not cover a whole queen or king mattress. If you want to share a blanket with a partner, Bearaby makes a larger queen and king size for that.

How to Pick Your Weight

The usual rule is to choose a blanket that is about 10 percent of your body weight. At 150 pounds, that points to the 15 pound Napper. Be careful if you land between two weights. Bearaby's page says to go with the lower one, while the Amazon listing says to round up to the heavier one. Since the two disagree, check Bearaby's size guide and weight calculator before you decide.

Who It Is For

This blanket suits someone who wants a weighted blanket that looks like a nice throw and is knitted rather than stuffed. The open knit is also why an independent reviewer at No Sleepless Nights found it more breathable than the weighted blankets he tried that have enclosed pockets of beads. That is his experience, not mine, and it may not match yours.

What to Know Before You Buy

Price. Bearaby lists the Cotton Napper starting at $199, and the price goes up with the weight. Amazon shows several prices depending on the size and color, so check the live Amazon listing for the exact price of the one you want.

Feel. The same reviewer says the cotton knit does not feel as soft and plush as blankets with a minky cover. If you want a fluffy surface, that matters. If you like a chunky knit look, it may not.

Care. Bearaby says to wash it separately in cold water on a delicate or permanent press cycle with mild detergent, and to tumble dry on low. It also says to skip fabric softener and bleach and to avoid top loading machines, and that it may need more than one dry cycle. Do not hang it to dry, since that can stretch the loops.

Shipping and returns. Bearaby's page lists free shipping, easy returns and a one year warranty. Those terms apply to Bearaby's own store, so check what applies if you buy through Amazon.

A weighted blanket is a comfort item, not a medical treatment. If you have a health condition or a question about sleep, talk to your doctor.

Is It Worth It

If you want a breathable, knitted weighted blanket and you are fine paying more for it, the Bearaby Cotton Napper is worth a close look. If you want the cheapest option, or a very soft plush feel, other styles will fit better. Pick your weight carefully, and read the live listing before you order.
